Dark Side of the Gym, Guilty Party, Nobody Else, I'll Still Destroy You are my faves

I do love Destroy but it’s one of the ones that relies more on studio fuckery/complexities of structure. As a pure song/tune it has a tad less going for it than most else here. Not a song I feel the need to hear on its own much.

I will defend Turtleneck until the Day I Die.

Turtleneck has grown on me quite a lot

Wish they replaced one or two of the weaker tracks with some more weird shit like that.

It has good production, sure, but you can't tell me that the progression from start to finish - especially the elevated emotion in Berninger's vocals on the final refrain and Devendorf's epic outro - don't qualify as something going on? Definitely has more going on than Nobody Else or Walk It Back.

I like Turtleneck but come on, it’s obviously the weakest here notwithstanding that it’s totally out of place. It wasn’t a great live track either, when I saw them Matt literally fucked it up halfway though and they started it over again.

Sowing it has more going on musically but what I was saying is that the tune at the core of it is weaker. I have no problem with it, I love stuff has lots of bells and whistles to it but at the end of the day I’ll always go for the stuff with a song at the core that’s as strong as the enhancements.

Nobody Else is a highlight here. One of my favorite National songs in general

How is it out of place? Turtleneck is out of place. Destroy You fits the mood, the lyrical topics, et al better than any other individual song here. I'd go as far as to say it's a top 7 national track in general (5 too high, 10 too low lol).

Crazy thing with this album is that despite how much I love it High Violet is still so much better. Like this is solidly a 5 now but I’d still only say 2-3 songs here are better than anything on HV.

I know, I was just about to post my top 10 National songs and then I realized it's like half of HV.

I would take Turtleneck over the three after it, to be honest.

Sorry Darius... It’s just the more time passes the more I’m convinced HV is my perfect album. I really don’t think I can fault a single second of it.
