First time listening to this guy, pretty chill so far. Thinking a hard 3.5 or so. How good is his other stuff?

If you like this definitely check out I Love You Honeybear which is a classic imo.

I'm really digging this, I think it's a blend between all 3 of his previous records.

Yeah JWT there's a bit of everything here - I guess that's why people are calling it a retread and I guess it kind of is but I think the songwriting itself it is still strong, particularly in the second half.

He can't please everyone: he goes with his romantic ballad Honeybear and it wasn't a change some liked compared to his straight forward debut, he then creates a magnum opus Pure Comedy filled with a full orchestra, lengthy tracks and him doing whatever the hell he wanted and it was too much and self grandiose. Now he dials it back and creates arguably one of his most concise and cohesive records to date, balancing the palate of his past 3 records and it's still not good enough for some. I've personally enjoyed the whole journey so far and I'll be interested in whatever Josh decides to create next.

"him doing whatever the hell he wanted and it was too much and self grandiose."

Pretty much my problem with Pure Comedy, all flair no substance, still need to listen to this though

See I'd argue that Pure Comedy had the most substance compared top any of his records, where Honeybear was a love album PC really put society, culture, and the world under a microscope. For this record Josh turned the microscope on himself and this is easily his most introspective record about himself.

I complete understand the sentiment on PC though.

PC has way more substance than this imo

'Tillman has turned the microscope on himself'...he ain't David Bowie, at least not yet, not sure he's earned my interest to the degree that 'dropping the mask' inherently captures my attention.

If anyone in 2018 needs a strong album theme it's this duderoo tbh

Oh I definitely wouldn't put him on the level of introspection of the likes of David Bowie, but compared to the rest of his catalog this is his most self conscious and introspective to date.

I have a sort of mini theory that this should really be considered a Josh Tillman album rather than a Father John Misty one but I haven't fleshed it out yet.

JT: Alright maybe its not "no substance" but it was imo overshadowed by what seems to me a desire to be too poignant, sucking the fun out of the whole thing

I'll agree with that, I also think the lengthy-ness cut into the substance for some, tracks like Leaving LA seemed tiresome for many listeners.

Boney: I agree, this record def has the least FJM qualities in terms of satire, irony, etc. He seems to drop the character FJM more on this record than compared to Honeybear and PC.

This album certainly sees Josh in his sincere mode more often than even ILYH and way more than Fear Fun and Pure Comedy (excluding Leaving LA).

Just dumb enough to try and title track are the best songs in this imo. Should I bother with Pure Comedy if I like this, but was mainly indifferent to ILYH?
