Album's getting a 4 right now because it's a 4 for me. But the cringey cover IS bumming me out.

The album cover is like if the She Watched The Sky and Fever album covers had a child.

Just gave this another listen for the first time in a while, and Lumiere still stomps this

Lumiere was an EP. I'm pretty sure Seeking and Unseen were old songs recycled too. Unfair comparison imo

How is comparing an EP to an LP unfair lol, especially considering it was only 3 tracks shorter. Yea Seeking and Unseen were released long before and rewritten/remastered, but I don't think that's unfair at all. Lumiere is a lot better than this, both instrumentally and vocally

I dug Lumiere, just saying there's way more meat here comparatively. Interested in why you think this is a step down though.

This is like a 3.7 for me whereas Lumiere is like a 4.4, Lumiere's peaks outshine the peaks on here too. This is solid tho

Weird because imo Lumiere is like a 2.2-2.3 while this is a 4.3. Strange that there's such a disconnect between us on this Steak.

@Steak Elaborate please. I may need to revisit that one honestly. I'm surprised how much I'm digging this one.

Recording a dope EP just isn't as impressive as recording a dope album to me.

Kyle relies far too much on his mids and cleans on this, and while his mids are great, it can get monotonous. He frequently varied his vocals from lows, mids, highs, and cleans on Lumiere, and they were all stronger on Lumiere. The instrumentation isn't nearly as good either, particularly the leads which seem to just be playing it safe most of the time. The climax on Unseen for example is spectacular and has the band firing on all cylinders, which is rarely heard on here. A lot of the heavy parts on this rely on loud by the numbers chugging, whereas they used to do it polyrhythmically and wrote heavy ass riffs. There are still parts of the Lumiere genius that peak their heads up, such as after the second chorus of Secrets (and then they put that unnecessary third chorus in). Wrath is great at mixing this new sound with elements of Lumiere, and Violator absolutely destroys. Floodgates also gets a special mention, as it channels Seeking and even sounds like it lol

I agree hard that Floodgates, Wrath and Violator slay, I disagree strongly that there is too much straight chugging. The guitar harmonies on this are sick, as are the drums and vocals. A bit too many sugary clean passages for me personally, but I already expected that from these guys.

Guitars on this aren't nearly as interesting or fun to me

Have to knock it down to a 3.5. Has worn off more with each listen.
