This album takes a while to grow on listeners. It's a very different texture and concept altogether. Once you look past the absence of their past style, you'll come to realize a fuller more subtle story accompanied by mellow and emotional music. I wouldn't let your first impressions be your final judgement here. The atmosphere, transitions, and lyrics accompanied by Keenan's vocals are spectacular. The album isn't as contrived as most of you make it out to be. Just because it's not "Mer de Noms" doesn't make it unbearable. That's just shallow.

It's sort of sad watching bands you used to love getting old.

yeah.

Maynard sounds great and all but why the hell is this so jangle and jingly-like? Distortion, need more distortion. just boring and drab.

Maynard has always been an absolutely terrible lyricist, I'm surprised anyone is shocked that 2018 hasn't changed that

oh come on.

Maynard is a way better lyricist than most if not all modern rock songwriters and bands. Thirteenth Step proved that. Ever heard "The Noose"?

"Maynard has always been an absolutely terrible lyricist"

nah its mostly just that hes super hit/miss and most often miss. if roger waters wrote "the patient" you'd write an essay about it (;

lmao I probably would tbf

a larger percentage of bad lyrics than good lyrics = a poor lyricist, imo. sure he's had moments (The Package would be my pick from 13th Step rather than the Noose) but a large majority of his stuff is shit. and I still enjoy most of the music he makes so I can't complain!
