Seems almost impossible he won't ruin a new TOOL album if the lyrics are anywhere even close to the vicinity of what's on here. Maybe he found Jesus.

I see now, I had thought it looked computer generated anyways.

Maynard's lyrics are fine on here and his vocal performance is arguably one of the best of his career.

album cover sux [360]

Pleasantly surprised by this though. I was super lukewarm on the singles, and while they're still far from my favorites here (and "Hourglass" was somehow even worse) most of them felt more natural in album context. Lyrics on this are a little ham-fisted at points, sure, but I'm digging this stylistic shift to less riff-driven song structures, embracing the piano and strings they exhibited on Thirteenth Step's softer moments and giving the songs space to breathe.

I think this is great. Expecting Mer De Noms 2.0 is just idiotic given their career progression, the direction Billy went on aSHES dIVIDE and just the fact most artist become more tame over time. Also hard to have a more edgy album without people like Twiggy in the room. Not the best record ever, I feel like some more risks could have been taken but overall I really enjoy this.

And yes, the album cover is shit. Eat the Elephant with an octopus on the cover with Maynard and Billy smashed together like they just discovered Hot Topic circa 2003.

It's an alright song. "Suck it up buttercup" is used sarcastically throughout the record. It's still one of my favorite albums of 2018. My favorite songs from the record are 'TalkTalk,' 'The Contrarian,' 'The Doomed,' 'By and Down the River,' and 'Feathers.'

Half the song lyrics on here are just castrated, rehashed versions of AEn[e]ma. It's like he found his rough draft and kept adding to all the things he thought should be flushed away, but they just kept getting more and more trite. Maynard's lyrical appeal was always his willingness to subvert social and sexual norms. "Disillusioned" should just be called "Get Off My Lawn."
