Their newer stuff isn't bad. They just deal with different concepts. This is more of an intellectual album compared to their newer work. It's very abstract and mind-bending where their new albums are condensed and radio-friendly. It's not a bad trade off, its just not as deep.

"Yeah, it's not a bad trade-off or anything. We just decided to get rid of everything that made us distinct and interesting in the first place."

That said, they still manage to make more interesting music than much of what the radio provides nowadays.

Twenty One Pilots sacrificed substance for style. They want intrapersonal lyrics in an extroverted genre. You can't have pop while maintaining intellectual/abstract/surrealistic lyrics. It just doesn't work like that. This album was a blessing in disguise for that reason. They had to sweeten their sound to avoid alienating mainstream listeners, but they instead produced confusion. That's why you have those stereotypical Hot Topic fans crowding the street.

For those who like Air Catcher, this is a redone alternative version that is pretty amazing

I can't believe I put this as a 3 to begin with, this is one of the best albums I've ever heard, and I'm seriously considering changing my 4.5 to a full on 5. It's just as good as the phenomenal Vessel (my entry point into TOP)

I don't think "Regional at Best" and "Blurryface" were bad. They were just overrated.

I liked Blurryface before it blew up, then it got completely overrated and made it a bit annoying. Still go back to it every now and then.

Trench is shaping up to be a pretty decent album though

I love this and I love their Vessel/Blurryface material even if they're totally different beasts. I love the raw emotion on this one, and I love the pop hooks in their newer stuff. Trench didn't quite reach the same heights — the 'narrative' kinda gets in the way, but it still has its moments.

But yeah Addict with a Pen is a hard 5/5
