Yeah neither did I because I'm not a massive fan of his previous two, but this thoroughly surprised me

When I heard Connected back in January it did nothing for me and now it's a highlight

i like this as an idea:

If someone like jack white can come up with something like this, then maybe rock music isn't doomed and can still be a genre where there's room for provocateurs, for weridos, failed experiments, dangerous ideas and vanguardists.

I'll probably hate it, tho lol.

right now rock, especially in the mainstream, needs forward thinking artists and albums like this

the way things are going with rock now, whether it's the insipid arena rock/electronics of Imagine Dragons or the boring songwriting of Royal Blood (still riffing off the already perfected White Stripes formula), I just don't see how it's going to be relevant in a mainstream context again

that' why i think this needs more attention, at least for its intentions:

Jack White (specially in his last solo albums) has come to represent this old-man 'rock used to be cool' taxidermist necrophiliac conservative, and a scene of 20 year-olds with fender guitars and tubular amps that are too worried in making music like 'it's meant to be, man' and less worried in creating art that defies expectations, tags or at least is fun or interesting in any way whatsoever.

That's exactly why I find this so exciting. He's genuinely pushing boundaries as opposed to playing it safe with revivalism. This album is getting an impassioned response out of people.

“Over and Over and Over” is very enjoyable. I actually like those backup vocals.

Kinda digging this so far. Only into the second song, but I think the shriller electronic sounds mesh well with the organic instruments. I love a good organ sound too and the first song had a sweet organ solo at the end. Vocals sound like Foxy Shazam to me. Pretty artsy sounding album and I don't mean that in a bad way (as I usually would).

I never really got into The White Stripes or Raconteurs aside from a song or two, btw.

A few more songs in and I'm really enjoying what I'm hearing. I'm willing to double-down on my previous assertment and say that the meshing of organic instruments and electronic noise is really tasteful here. The weird rapped vocals in Ice Station Zebra reminds me of tUnE-yArDs.

Respect Commander is a stellar track.
