TSS is definitely better, but there are some good individual tracks here, Windmill and Scotland stand out early on.

I like this a bit more than TSS so far, just because it has the benefit of being more conceptually engaging (as an album). The closer works itself impressively well into Loser.. It feels both more focussed and more willing to give into its freakouts.

I see what you're saying, maybe I'm still hung-up on their older style and this will grow on me? I'm definitely liking it more with each listen, which is why I've held off on my rating

I bet I need more time with it, honestly. Doesn't seem as easy to love as TSS, more scatterbrained and tense

Even if it doesn't grow on the two of you (although I hope it does), I definitely understand a preference for TSS and their older stuff over this. Despite the dark subject matter, BeachBoy felt a lot freer, whereas TSS was, as Ben said, scatterbrained and tense. I think the difference here is that that the band's tension and go-where-they-please approach to songwriting manage to synthesise a bit more, perhaps at the expense of certain qualities. As heartwrenching as songs like It's A are, none of them are as bitter as Outlaw, and no matter how uninhibited something like Loser. is, it's not nearly as anthemic or rousing as Dead-Bird. What it loses in those departments, however, I think it makes up for with a great sense of clarity I do (ironically) find a bit hard to express.
