@Rowan5215 just curious, what are some of the lyrics on this that you would consider "very poor"?

@frankcostanza happy Festivus! just a couple of examples

"But death it caught you in a bad mood / didn't matter that it wanted you / don't bother asking what would Jesus do / cos you'd never give it up that soon"

"it's always an iron age / but could I choose my cage"

"can I really choose if I don't know the options? do we ever use a fraction of the caution that we ought to when we meet ourselves?"

some real third-grade poetry stuff in there, although most of the other lyrics are decent enough for sure

a podcast came out earlier this week and the hosts had emailed Mason asking for a bit of clarification on this album's narrative. I'll link to the full thing below, but here's his answer:

"The central character is a charcoal burner, living and working at the bottom of a canyon. His soul is stolen from him by the sun goddess, Amaterasu. After he falls in love with her, he climbs up a mountain in an attempt to reach the highest peak, where Amaterasu’s temple sits, so he can take back his soul. In the process he encounters creatures drawn from Japanese mythology, like enenra, satori, tengu, and waira, and eventually does find the goddess. He never recovers the soul he was looking for, but discovers a new, better one has grown in its place.

There’s obviously more to it, but that’s the general arc and the narrative foundation on which we built the lyrics. We’ve been toying with the idea of somehow releasing the whole story in some format, but for now we like letting people work through their own interpretations. In any case, we like to think that the songs transcend the specifics of the story and relate to real life emotions and experiences for the listener."

Of course random lyrics taken out of context look bad on their own.

every time I so much as think of this album, I get all excited. Birdless Cage, Dialogues, and The Canyon are all kinda perfect. Easily my biggest AOTY contender so far.

Same here. The only one so far for me tbh, it hasn't exactly been a killer year in my favorite genres.

Sowing, get yourself to Rolo Tomassi and Typhoon

edit: just saw your 3 for Typhoon and I'm baffled, but at least check Rolo Tomassi. Blows me away on every listen

I could revisit Typhoon tbh; that rating was based off 2 listens and it just didn't grip me. Everyone's been raving about RT so that's on my list although it's probably not something I would have normally listened to.
