Whoa, that's insanely high. Pitchfork have been promoting the crap out of this band, though, so it's not surprising. I think it's really, really good, probably a 3.7 or so.

"But unlike so many other disillusioned 18-year-olds with a Fender and a microphone, Jordan does not whine or wallow; she transcends." Bleh, this review... This is the kind of analysis that kills the art, I think.

I closed the tab when I saw that whirlwind of comparisons in the second paragraph (Frank Ocean, Paramore, Fiona Apple... fuck off)

Ugh. Yes, it reeks. The emphasis on her age -- once again -- rubs me the wrong way as well.

Shit tier band name but we shall see...

I’d be interested in this artist if we weren’t already inundated with tame singer/songwriter stuff backed by 90s style indie rock without the punch. She could be good, great even but I’ve largely stopped caring about this scene.

Pitchfork really want her to be the ‘voice of the generation’ but this sound is already growing old yeah

The Pitchfork score did catch my eye on a slow Friday for new releases...I'm looking in the wrong place with this band huh?

It’s a slow week sure yet I’m still reeling from last week. I appreciate the breather.

If you've not listened to the band at all, this EP is a good taster -- good indication of what the album will be, though more immediate.

What I want to know is what happened to all the rock bands? In the last several years it seems everything is a solo project - even if the artist goes by a different name as here and is “technically” a band the focus in criticism is always on the singer him or herself. I’m still a hopeless rockiest by nature and I love singer/songwriters but if the genre is going to reinvigorate itself we need some more true bands to come in and take over again.
|
| |
And before anyone gets on my case - I’m sure there are great new rock bands out there but they don’t seem to be getting the same kind of attention as stuff like this.

you ever been in a band Boney? there's usually a reason why, it's cuz the "main" person is the only one who writes the songs and just needs ppl to play live for them / record. my bands work a bit differently but it's the same deal with American Poetry Club which is basically a Jordan solo project
|
| |
I haven't been in a "real" band no, but I don't really think that's the case most of the time. Sure the frontperson will always get more attention than the other members but I feel like it's only recently where you have all these supposed "bands" that are basically just solo projects. Think of all the great bands of decades past - it wasn't a universal rule but by and large those operated as strong cohesive musical units even if the lead singer was a driving force. I'm not saying every band today is just a glorified solo project, what I'm pointing out more is the opposite, that there seem to be more solo projects than ever even in the context of "full band" music.

i was a hater of this type of shit but this is really surprisingly good

yeah but with everyone's lives n shit ppl arent just dropping everything to join some one-off solo project. it's a sign of the times really but like it's usually like that cuz kids these days dont wanna form a cohesive band just to have the drummer and bassist move to Cali or have college end or graduate from high school like in Snail Mail's case ahah
|
| |
I don't know that I really accept that, why would that be a concern today more so than at any other time? Radiohead started as a high school band and they all went to college. I still feel there are many fewer creative "groups" today even outside of rock music what with rap, r&b, pop etc being the genres of the day.

because everyone is tryna do everything instead of just focusing on music due to how easy ppl can make n record music nowadays

I guess I guess. Idk, in my mind much as I love solo projects I still feel four minds is almost always better than one.
