Cool to hear you guy's perspectives as someone who's first "new" Metallica release was Lulu.

Feel like a lot of people (including the band themselves to an extent) make the popularity of this album upon release sound lesser than it actually was, and that this album and everything before were just cult classics pre-One video/the black album, and that the success of the black album made everyone go back through their back-catalog. Not sure how true that is though.

i would say their popularity in this era was probably about what pantera's was in the mid 90s. the black album transcended them beyond metal and into mainstream popular culture

It’s fucking hard to get any context nowadays. Music was so much more ‘tangible’ back then. People were emboldened by the scene as it was not the commodity it has now become.

I don’t know if it’s how my mind was or I’ve got the old rose tints on but the sense of a bands purpose was a lot more palpable back then.

I was too young to ‘get this’ back then. Quite literally me mum wouldn’t of allowed it.

I learned all my metal back then from Headbangers Ball and going to the local record store. Remember tho - there were no music videos from this. I also discovered Voivod, Carcass and Anthrax from classmates wearing their t-shirts.

the fact that no one really pays for music (or, more appropriately, bands don't get paid for their work) has a lot to do with it

I'm guessing the same user created the Maynard and Scott Stapp alts. They're all role playing alts

No worries. Their reactions and insight are fun to watch and gives you a nostalgic rush. They did Freezing Moon by Mayhem yesterday.
