Listened to the Delines album again earlier this week actually. I’d definitely appreciate a new one from them, though I read their progress was delayed by the singer getting injured in a car crash. That was a while ago though, hopefully she’s mostly recovered by now.

Read the novel over the last two days, finished the last 100 pages listening to the album twice through...incredible.
Novel is perhaps the best sad and beautiful world Vlautin has come up with yet.
Basically the novel is like the RF song ‘The Pull’ given another 2000 verses, and that’s a damn good thing. Album sounds even better for reading the novel too.

I...didn’t like the book, really. The characters didn’t resonate with all and the narrative felt strangely surface level and predictable. Too much telling instead of showing, which ironically I feel is the opposite of how Vlautin’s songs are. That said it’s possible the style just wasn’t for me - I do tend to have a harder time with realistic fiction. ¯l_(ツ)_/¯

‘Too much telling instead of showing’
Vlautin rarely describes feelings directly though, just practical and mundane observations for the most part :/
I thought it was the usual bittersweet subtlety but I’m a sucker for his writing - there were tears, esp when I started playing the album

That’s fair Doof, as I said it probably just didn’t appeal to me. I can see how one could appreciate his plainspoken writing style but when the story itself was so mundane it did little for me. I found the dialogue pretty poor as well, but again to each his own. Probably I’ve just been ruined by massive fantasy epics. :-P
