He was always a poor vocalist - even in The Jester Race days - but was always saved by incredible guitar work. Now that the songwriting has gone out the window it highlights just how shitty he is at both screaming and singing.

Yeah that's exactly it, it sucks how he wants to draw attention to his vocals now more than ever. I did like his performance on Colony though, even if the instrumentation probably still carried it.

Yeah this is probably the dumbest fucking thing I've ever read anywhere on the internet.
Except it's entirely true. His screams were stronger (read: deeper in pitch and more powerful) than they are now but they have always been subpar when compared to his contemporaries, especially in regards to range and emotion. People just don't talk much about how poor he was because of how stellar the guitar riffs are that it completely masks his performance.
I think it is no coincidence that Dark Tranquillity really took off when he left and Stanne replaced him. Friden's voice was the achilles heel of Skydancer and far and away its weakest point - the highlight of the record was "Shadow Duet" simply because Stanne did half the vocals on that track.
