Well she's just being told what to do and how to act for character's sake by someone else so I doubt it

I'm genuinely astonished by these ratings. As much as I love her previous album, this one is far superior in terms of being experimental. Her last album played it rather safe yet has higher ratings. My guess is that for the vast majority of people writing these reviews, they wanted a consistent style. However, I love the fact that she does not produce generic or similar sounding songs. As someone with an eclectic set of preferences it is lovely to go from Interweb (my favorite) to My microphone.
It's this diversity that allows me to say that Poppy does something no other artist/band, not even my favorite band Devo was able to do: create an album which every song is worth listening to!

The lyrics have multiple layers.
On the first layer they are excellent good mood bopping party hits. They just are.
The problem is most "reviewers" here stop right here and rate the record superficially. And that's a problem as the reviews are therefore skewed and shortsighted.
On a deeper level these songs are a bitter and spitting social and societal commentary. But that would require a bit of thinking about the lyrics, listen to them more than once and grasp the essence of the Poppy entity.
That's were many here failed including the reviewer. The character isn't paper thin. It's actually one of the most complex, deepest characters in the entire pop industry. The entire character is pure art.
Compared to Poppy, most of todays singers are flat. They sing and that's it. They mean what they sing. No message. Poppy is different. Very different.
She takes on idiots on the internet, loneliness, greed, materialism, superficiality, conspiracy theorists, hate. All at the same time. But contrary to boring singers like every other one, she doesn't punch it in your face. Its much more subtle. Ironic. Sarcasm.
All the symbols in the videos, every word in the lyrics are not there by chance or as a gimmick. They are carefully designed and planted for good reason.
And that's how she must be measured. Poppy.Computer is simply too clever, too deep for many to comprehend. And that's why its a 5.0 classic.
