I would agree with that, but I really like The Hunter too. I don’t think Mastodon have a weak, or even mediocre, album in their discog. They only have great, not as great and good.

For me The Hunter falls into the "good" category. OMRTS is more like a 3.3 for me. I agree they haven't released anything mediocre except for the Jonah Hex soundtrack they had to re-record because the producers deemed the original "too heavy".

Both Hunter and OMRTS have amazing songs, and some great guitar work and vocals. Distinct characters as well. I'd honestly miss them if they magically disappeared.
