Album in general seems a little slow and "classic" for my taste, hope it grows on me.
Collapser is the obvious highlight.
I'm not a huge fan of the two songs with singing, Nostalgist sounds like a late PBBT song (I thought it was Mike Kinsella at first lol).

Working my way through their albums for the first time these last few days. Thought that Waking Season was a good improvement upon the first two, but it all felt a little uninspiring. Nothing, absolutely nothing could have prepared me for this one. It sounds like a different band. The production is shimmering and there’s some life in the mix with the treble alive and clear. A new found sense of atmosphere and depth, with a greater use of electronics to embellish the songs, and the use of synths as well to provide some much needed variety to their sound. These songs are powerful without relying on (tired overuse of) a wall of distorted guitars. This is more intelligent and thoughtful in the way the band have found new ways to convey power. And this is just after the first listen. I can tell this will be on the headphones for weeks!!

They're really able to balance the strength and the restraint of the genre very well. But when it comes to heaviness, gotta give it to "Echo & Abyss" though.

Strangely, I find echo and abyss quite soothing overall, mostly due to the second half when the vocals kick in, kind of reminds me of Mew, and it all becomes relatively uplifting albeit at a fast tempo with layers of guitars. The heaviness in arcs of command also comes down to the atmosphere of it and the intensity that builds.

I really should listen to this more. These guys are one of of *the* best postrock bands, but I always forget about them for some reason

Five years too late!!! But this has very quickly become one of the most amazing albums for me. Reading endless reviews of post rock bands which I have been doing of late, you’d almost convince yourself as is often stated that the genre is dead and buried, or at least stagnant and treading water - and that the majesty and power of the originators will never be repeated. Well it’s albums like these (and Jakob) where I think these are actually better, more emotionally impactive, more engaging and immediate and just have something special to offer. This album is just perfect for headphones in a quiet room.

i'll never forget when i saw them live on this album and they played sad heart of mine immediately following arcs of command, it was such an unreal moment.. cutting from the full on noise of the last seconds of arcs into those clean openings sounds of heart, fucking insane
