Seriously, as the review suggests, I doubt they'd have been given a second or third or tenth chance to make it in the late 80s/early 90s.
They'd have been buried.
Thank the lord they weren't...but lucky them.

they were talking about being 'kids' on alligator and transitioning into mundane adulthood, so possibly reflecting on it as young adults
boxer is completely different subject matter

Boxer is a young adult realizing he's become a boring old dude, the kind of person the guy on Alligator was terrified to become, and trying to cling on to whatever remaining youth he can. High Violet is that guy struggling with depression and keeping his family together. The following ones sadly don't fit as neatly into that progression

anatelier - 'Walk it Back' took a while to worm its way into my affections but it's now where the album really starts to settle down into the meaty stuff for me.

Starless - I never really detected such a big overriding theme but I'm not generally one to sit down and pore over all the lyrics sheets for an album anymore. Something like Karen never struck me as being sung about kids? Or Val Jester? Maybe they are, I can see that overall it is more youthful in both themes and energy than the last few albums.
'Alligator' does have a drunken 'city streets at night' sparkle to it a lot of the time, so I do understand why people love it. It's a great album but I just really like the fully formed, all grown up National that emerged on 'Boxer' and has kept on keeping on since.

Beautifully written, Doof. From Empire Line onwards, album is GOAT. First half is incredible too, but it has more of a familiar feeling.

Lethal - interesting to hear they're winning over new fans with this, wasn't sure they would
JesusC - I agree 'Destroy You' is still a strong song
