“You Had Your Soul” is probably my least favorite, but it grew on me. 3.5 I guess, I like what it’s doing but I’ll admit it doesn’t fully come together.
“Light Years” I only listened once or twice but that blew me away, easy 4.5.
“Hairpin” I just listened once yesterday. I wasn’t fully convinced by the first half but by the end I loved it. Conservative 4 I guess but I bet it’ll grow.
I’m willing to accept this new one may ruin the 5 streak but I really don’t think it’ll be below at 4 for me. This album took a good 15 listens to really click so I’m of course prepared to let the new one take its time.

yeah hairpin is the only one that's remotely interesting imo. it's actually a pretty good track, might add it to my 2019 playlist. the other ones just sound like the national going through the motions. dull, monotonous coasting.

Alright, had to listen to "Hairpin." Sounds like a mixture of HV and TWFM which is a very good thing, although it does feel a little less ambitious than most of the songs on here.

Soul is the only of the new songs that really caught my interest :-(
It's The National though so I'm not worried, album will be typically amazing after giving it some time

haven't listened to any of the singles and i probably won't bother until the full album is out or it leaks. expecting something more in the vein of Trouble Will Find Me though

From the sounds of things it definitely will be. Whether it will match or surpass that album, well it's up in the air (pun intended ;)

hairpin turns has become one of my favourite national songs. don't rly care for the others much but god damn that one is poignant.

just saw the short film at a preview thing, looking forward to how that one divides the National crowd, especially based on age differences lol. I enjoyed it though

but music wise we're in for the good shit from what I heard. it's definitely the least Berninger-centric album they'll ever do and the female vocals don't feel token or wasted at all. Rylan is, as we all expected, probably a top 10 Natty song overall. Quiet Light and Sometimes I Don't Think are bangers

Hairpin Turns has a refrain that is peak-national but I'm not quiet sold on the verses yet.

Listening again now and Hairpin is just so average imo
Sounds like a B-Side

From what I've heard, I am Easy to Find won't have the high points of Sleep Well Beast but will be much more consistent (there are no Born to Begs or at least Roman Holiday is a much superior version) but production might make a hell of a difference. The studio take of Hairpin Turns is far more striking than its live counterpart.

Must be an almighty snore live then
Tbh half of the SWB songs were awful when performed live when I saw them in support of that album.
They used to be the greatest live band too :'(

lol hairpin is the only one i like so far. beautiful piano melody and love the chorus. the rest sounds bland as hell to me

I've already got tickets to see them again in October and their SWB show was one of my favorite concerts ever so I'm keeping my hopes up.
