True, I just like one or two to make the grade/live up to expectations or if not, be a pleasant surprise in some way

We've had our fair share of MBDTFs and TPABs this decade. I'm not drawn to world-conquering statement albums...

no one writes a love song like Matt and Dark Side of The Gym is probably his best

I’m not really interested in the next big release these days, my favourite albums every year are mostly ones that I’ve stumbled upon. expectation has a heavy weight. [2]
Yeah, whilst not a hot take, I do find that the expectation can hinder / cripple my enjoyment of a record. That Rolo Tosmassi record was never as heavy or elegant as the hype suggested to me, nor was that Daughters record as harrowing as I'd hoped. Also I find it much easier to build a personal connection with some underground record no one's heard of.
That being said, I adore this and got swept up in the hype train.

This grew off me hard, unfortunately. The second half (except I'll Still Destroy) just doesn't do it.

I want to love this as much as Alligator or Boxer, but it’s just not happening. In fact I could easily settle for High Violet-like enjoyment at this stage.

Need to give this another crack. Didnt grab me straigh away like alligator, boxer or high violet did, which all grew into classics for me.

I'll Still Destroy You is probably top 5 The National tracks, when all is said and done. So so great.

i'll still destroy you, nobody else will be there, carin, and gym are the only songs i care to revisit. the rest is so bloody boring. title track is one of their worst.
|

Destroy You, Carin and Gym are the best here so I at least agree with you there
I absolutely love the T/T tho, tied for my 2ND favorite closer of theirs

This is better than TWFM tbh, but both are a step down from the holy trifecta of Alligator/Boxer/HV.
