I say criminally underrated because they don't receive a lot of attention outside of certain circles. Considering their diversity and energetic live performances, they could be very successful.

That may be true, but considering that the genre isn't very popular also raises a point. Personally, I don't believe alternative-metal exists. There are few if any differences between alternative-metal and nu-metal. Not to mention most nu-metal bands who didn't want to be scrutinized joined alternative-metal because they felt it was more "legit." Not only that, but Chevelle is more of an alternative band than anything.
