I must take issue with your assessment that the instrumentation is less interesting or has taken a backseat. Reason: there are instruments besides guitar. This is an easy thing for metal listeners to forget. Baard's drumming alone is as prominent as the vocals in many tracks. The repeated use of strings. Keyboards. Open your ears and you'll be amazed at what you hear.

^ I see your point but you could've worded that a little less..condescending?

@Mishaxhi You do know that Leprous always had the frantic drumming and keyboards? the instrumentals here are still more dull than on Bilateral for instance

@Beardog
Absolutely, when I think of intense metal drumming the very first song that comes to mind is Waste of Air. That first minute or two where it's nothing but snare on the 16th and double kick? Insane. But Baard brings a very different, dare I say a more soloistic approach to it. See the title track, Malina - to be completely honest I'm more taken by the drumming over most of this track than I am the vocals. He's not just keeping time, his instrument has its own voice in the song. Again, I believe you're confusing "exciting" with "metal." There are indeed other modes of expression, this one being a bit more subtle. That's not to mention the heavy use of strings.
@supremejelly
You're absolutely right, I'm sure I come off as a bit curt here and I apologize for that. I don't mean to be confrontational, this just tends to be a hard idea to get through to people.

confusing "exciting" with "metal".
wow, no words. This has nothing to do with the drum patterns being metal. I don't give a flying fuck if Baard uses a shit ton of double bass or not, if he did on this record I would've probably even liked it way less, cause it just wouldn't fit the songs.
Metal drumming can be stale as fuck and I don't see why you have to be condescending about it. Drumming is either exciting or boring. You think you can judge everyone that doesn't like this record because you think they are all metalheads that only want brutal music. Nice prejudices dude, way to fucking go.
The problem with this record for most people is that some cool drum patterns and, dare I say, over the top vocal patterns aren't enough to keep a whole record interesting. YES; the violins are a nice touch to the music and YES; the lack of guitars shouldn't have to be a problem. The problem here is that Leprous took a very minimalistic approach to these songs, and it just doesn't always work out as well, when on past records there were more layers to keep the repetition and atmosphere interesting, and less empty. For most listeners the problem isn't the lack of guitar, it's the lack of exciting layers, the (for some) less captivating melodies and the overal feeling of Leprous becoming 'the Einar show'.
Leprous had exciting drumming on all their records. Leprous had keyboards on all their records. They used violin on their previous records. But they also used to have engaging guitar riffs and melodies, which are watered down on this record.
Sorry for the harsh words but your comments just annoy the shit out of me
