What is it with people and Melodrama? It has nothing on Pure Heroine. Its average at best if not a little less than mediocre. It just sounded like she drank some Tay Swift kool-aid in their hangout sessions.

Liability, Sober, Supercut, etc. are incredibly generic contemporary pop songs and how you guys hear anything other than that when Pure Heroine by comparison was such a game changer is beyond me. Melodrama for the most part sounds like Lorde doing Tay Swift pop with her slight edge thrown in for alt cred.

Maybe the hype for it lay in the fact that people that may not listen to pop music as openly feel comfortable liking Lorde?

Compared to Melodrama, Pure Heroine is a damn masterpiece.

And not hearing Taylor Swift in Perfect Places/Supercut is a bit delusional.

The only connection between t swift and lorde is that jack antanoff produced both of their albums, that might be where you're hearing similarities

umm you realize that on swift's 1989, she took on other pop styles, particularly that of lorde?

the beat on and feel of perfect places is somewhat reminiscent to blank space, which was heavily influenced by lorde. so you're basically saying that lorde is being influenced by people who are almost directly influenced by her.

True, most of the similarity is in the production style but I think her pop lyricism veers into 1989 territory as well though imo. But to each their own I guess, Melodrama was incredibly underwhelming for me. Don't get the hype whatsoever.

So you're saying Pure Heroine wasn't a game changer but are now admitting to the fact that Taylor Swift was heavily influenced by it with her most successful record to date? Interesting.

"game changer" depends on what scope and in comparison to what. taylor took on several stylistic changes and influences, don't assume that lorde was the only one or the most important one.

lyrically, i'll give you that (i couldn't tell ya).

I think Lorde was absolutely one of the most important ones considering a majority of 1989 consists of minimalistic pop beats. Taylor may have dabbled somewhat in stylistic changes on the record but lets not act like its incredibly diverse either. Idk lol i've got a BBQ to attend. I must leave. But thanks for the conversation.

Seriously don't get what's so great about Melodrama.

Rainbow is brilliant. I don't love all the tracks, but I love the album as a whole, I love Kesha, and I love everything she stands for and what this album represents. I love how she's grown as an artist and how she not only writes music that is meaningful and relevant, but also seems to be taken more seriously now as an artist. Always been a fan of Kesha. I'm thrilled to see this album being so well received.

Well I just saw Praying on TV and discovered she can actually sing! Pleasantly surprised, will probably give this a shot.

thing about pure heroine is the people were already doing the same "minimal type" pop music before her. particularly lana del rey whom i personally find is ~more influential, though not necessarily to radio pop canon.

varying styles explored in 1989: out of the woods (slightly more indie pop sound imo: likely via antonoff), shake it off (cheerleader dance-pop a la gwen stefani/avril), style (actual 80s synthpop or 2010s synthpop trendy revival), lorde twice, wildest dreams (lana del rey), how you get the girl sounds like teenage dream-era katy perry, probably some more but i'm not keeping track at all.

not to say these styles are special or even very different from one another. but imo they're clearly felt and prevalent.
