He definitely writes lyrics first and then molds them around music. Which is why they don't always translate perfectly in context of the music, but on their own they really read as nice pieces of poetry

Kinda ironic how fans of 'progressive' music often have the most tunnel visioned views of how it should sound like. Not to say that this isn't a poppy album, but it definitely draws its influences from the genre.
