@GhandiLion Oh, I know Ornette and Mingis well; I was moreso talking about the Japanese scene, as clearly stated throughout the paragraph, particularly in the topic sentence.

@plane Thanks! It was indeed so; Ryo really did play a massive part in the scene.

@Drifter Ah, it's fine. People have all the right to like/dislike my reviews. If I didn't want criticism, I wouldn't put them online.

"There's a number of electronic records I have stumbled upon out of Japan from the '70s and '80s that seem heavily influenced from the jazz scene, and from the way people write about it, Fukui must have played a huge part."

that's quite questionable

"He borrowed elements of post-bop, cool jazz, and even blues to create something unique, something unheard of before: a jazz album that prioritized composition rather than improvisation. "

Nope, there is nothing about it being "unique to jap jazz". If I make cool-bop jazz in Greenland, it is still just cool-bop. Jap-Jazz is not a genre. Even if the scene actually had some semblance of a unique sound.

It's not even the first "composition focused" jazz album in japan https://youtu.be/y_uqr5m300c

Yes, of course; modal jazz is modal jazz wherever it is. However, the way influences were implemented on this album was unseen in Jap-Jazz. Therefore, it is "unique to Jap-Jazz," as in "unique from the perspective of Jap-Jazz." The phrasing implies that the unique factor comes from the album within the scene, rather than the scene itself.

And, no, it isn't the first composition-based jazz album in Japan, but it is the first popular example of such. Therefore, it can be said it was "unseen" in the scene before, as it brought such structure into the spotlight.

This album's popularity is more recent, and I get the sense people are vastly overrating its importance.

It is also important to mention the Jap-Jazz scene was rather esoteric and small; the album's effect on the scene was heavy, but the scene itself wasn't big to start off.
