Born to die would be a 5 without the clunker of that final song

13 Beaches is gorgeous. Really like When the World Was at War, too.

new album is good but idk it isn't amazing. i wish we could get another born to die - an album full of hooks and variety. her albums since then, despite having good songwriting on individual tracks, sound really homogeneous as a whole, and i don't think NFR is any different. it has some really great standalone tracks but front-to-back it's kind of a chore to listen to

I’ve become a huge Lana fan and I still absolutely cannot stand Bored To Die
I think NFR is her best album by a pretty big margin; I definitely understand the idea that people are going to get burnt out on it being so long and kinda monochromatic but I think her melodies, lyrics and vocals easily carry it through, and on the songs where the music/production really stands out (T/T, Venice Bitch, The Greatest, California) the results are spellbinding
|
| |
I don’t think I’ve listened to an LDR album in full but definitely “interesting” to charge homogeneity to the non-BTD ones; I remember Born to Die being very, erm, cohesive in terms of the approach to production and sampling. Feels like one person behind the whole thing. I guess ultraviolence sorta has the noir guitar shit going on too. No shade tho
|
| |
@gyro: homogeneous is a lazy criticism you deploy often. the aesthetic cohesiveness of NFR is purposeful like slex said. it’s the ultimate realization of her vision
|
| |
Homogeneous is just applicable to a lot of things tbh, or 'monochromatic', as slex said. "noir guitar shit' see, this is how i'd categorize most of post BTD lana. A lot of it is just this slow noir shit with few hooks and little musical variety, whereas i think the songs on BTD sound very distinct.
|
| |
That’s weird to me because I thought both Honeymoon and Lust For Life were sadly all over the place and I’m so happy she nailed down a consistent sound for NFR

"You fucked me so good I almost said 'I love you'."
As usual it's filled with golden one-liners.

This now has fewer votes than Norman Fucking Rockwell.

i find it interesting that the second half of this is pretty universally the preferred one here; i love the first half a ton and then it kinda falls off a cliff for me

This is a great album, but the track listing could definitely have been trimmed, 12 songs would have been a solid amount

yea 10 songs this would be a 5/5
