Awful guitar tone that doesn't cut through the mix, muddy bass guitar, brickwalled drums, lifeless synthesizers that overpower everything else, the vocals are too loud, I can go on and on.
Listen to Sagas by Equilibrium or Varangian Way by Turisas if you want this cheesy "SUPER EPIC" style of metal done right.
Ideally Jari should have gone for a Moonsorrow-style production if he really wanted that earthy, dynamic sound. He says this is the pinnacle of his production skills and is really "hi-fi" but honestly the self-titled album sounds a lot better.
tl;dr hire someone to mix this.

they gave him more money than help than they gave practically any other band on the label to make time i, and he still couldn't deliver even that. he refused to give the reigns to someone else who had any idea what they were doing. it's jari's stubbornness, it isn't anything to do with money.

Speaking of that, it's quite amazing that Wintersun got so big after releasing just one album. It was very good alright, but bands like Be'lakor or Insomnium release albums of that quality almost routinely.
