'All I'll say is anyone who thinks a song like 'No Surprises' is the sort of thing Chris Martin might have written is 'surface level skimming' and probably deserves stoning to death.'
Strongly put but I have to agree.

yeah doof, no hard feelings but also you literally just said: "anyone who thinks a song like 'No Surprises' is the sort of thing Chris Martin might have written is 'surface level skimming' and probably deserves stoning to death."
this is a good write-up taken as blasphemy because people have taken Rowan's perception of the relationship between The Bends and OKC as something more than perception

'Stoning to death'
Just to clarify, I'm not actually going to kill Row, it was like - a joke

You're of course entitled to your opinion but you sound like you've approached OK Computer wrong from the get go and you don't seem to have any respect for the fact that for many people it's one of the greatest albums ever made. I mean from reading this review one might think your opinion on this is the majority. And while I understand is your review so it's your opinion presented, in this case it's not really appropriate to not address the album's overall reception because that's the reason this reissue exists.

i know :~) but that doesn't exactly qualify as "friendly discussion"
|

Some interesting discussion here, it's generally a decent review although I do agree with the points about decontextualizing.
Reading this is making me want to play this again, hoping it's still as wonderful now as it was all those years ago (seriously, it's been a long time). Don't know if I'll bother with this version, however.

LandDiving, there is an objective aspect to that issue since we're taking about how things sound - and the fact is the songwriting and sound of this album is quite different from that of The Bends.

Gotta give props for not instantly just 5ing this in the review, it seems like anything less than that here is going to catch you some serious flack.
It's still a great album, but yeah, I'm not entirely convinced by the B-Sides. I guess there was a reason they weren't included initially.
|
| |
The context is Row and myself enjoy a little scrap from time to time and he knows I'm only saying that sort of thing cos I know he gets it and I know he can take it :3

possible interpretations of 'stoned to death:'
- made to smoke pot until deadly asthma attack
- made to listen to Emotional Rescue until brain aneurism
- pummeled with rocks until dead

Also Row it's a bit unclear - is the score based only on the B-sides, or the whole thing taken together?

Boney: that's not inarguably objective my friend -- if row hears elements of The Bends in OKC, who are you to say that he's wrong
Also, Doof: it's all good brother just wanna make sure this discussion isn't lopsided because i kinda agree with what Row is saying

I think my biggest problem with this review is not the opinion held therein but rather the dismissive tone with which it's presented (and with which the writer has responded in the comments so far).
|
| |
Yeah Boney's nailed it I think. The argument is a reasonable one, the delivery makes it seem less reasonable

It seems like the tone of the delivery matches the review and rating given. Not sure what you guys are seeing?
|
| |
Boney the review is a little confrontational - makes me want to put up an 'Amnesiac' review...
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.0
doof i'd love to see an Amnesiac review
|
| |
I don't think it's right for people to be rating this album based on the b-sides alone since the original album is still there. Why would you ignore it when it's part of the package?
|
| |
LandD - all it would take would be me assembling all my many comments concerning that album scattered among the various Radiohead threads on the site, I've said a hell of a lot about that album.
Most of it inflammatory bullshit.

so what you're saying, doof, is that it'd be a very entertaining read?
