Ascendancy is fucking incredible. It's the best album I have heard in this genre hands down. Super 90 sounds like a cheap imitation of it. That said, it's a cheap imitation of something amazing so it's still pretty good but I have a hard time enjoying it since I have Ascendancy as a reference point. There isn't a single track on there that is better than any track on Ascendancy. Super 90 has simpler riffs, pretty bad choruses and clean vocals all the way around (what happened to the great clean vocals?!), much darker and narrower atmosphere, slower and more simplistic songwriting, worse production, huge lack of lead guitar work.
The best thing it did for me is appreciate Ascendancy more, which I am currently enjoying more than I ever have. On the release day for Super 90 I listened to Ascendancy after and that was my best listen so far so it was pretty immediate.
And all this just says how massively talented these guys are, because Super 90 is a disappointment but I still think it's a great record for the genre and their playing ability is still awesome.
