For me it's simple: pop music is all about the hooks. This has it, the Coldplay record really didn't (besides Hymn for the Weekend and Up & Up). I should probably bump up my rating for that to at least a 2.5 though, it did grow on me since its release and I'm a sucker for Coldplay.

Well considering I skipped Hunting Party and this is my follow up to Living Things, maybe that's part of the problem. Not sure, I just know I enjoyed this more than probably anyone else on this site.

Fair enough, although I find the song with the monkey video catchier than anything on this, and Chris' voice is more fitting for full-on pop than Chester's.

Listened to the first two songs yesterday and it was the most uninspired and bland performance I've heard in ages. Worth persisting?

agreed on that
Coldplay is a better pop band overall than LP

@Scuro: not worth pursuing if you hated the first 2 songs; it's very samey (which for me was nice because I liked the first few tracks)

The thing I've gathered the most from these threads is really just that I need to listen to The Hunting Party. I had no idea it got such a positive reception.

Well, it's the rockiest since Meteora and doesn't sound forced like the heavier tracks from LT.

I'll listen to it tomorrow then. HT and Meteora are my favorites, like for most people, and everything they did after those that tried to harken sounded forced and fell flat. So if you guys are telling me it's the most organic rock album they've made since then, even if it's not quite as good, I'm on board. Even though I really enjoyed this start to finish as a purely pop experience, I still prefer their heavier side when it is well executed. Hybrid Theory and especially Meteora are borderline classics for me because they came out during the anxiest possible time of my life: middle school/early high school.

Yeah, pretty much. It also has some of their most interesting compositions. It's really baffling hearing the closer on THP and then coming to this album...

This is, as expected, horrendous. Sputnik despises it, Sowing inexplicably likes it, everything in the right place.
I'd honestly prefer them to split at this point. If their definition of "maturity" comes along with "writing formulaic obnoxious RnB cold showers",they''d better stop right away. I'm amazed on how they seem to think that this is even acceptable; did no one really told them that they were doing total shit?

Probably the truest comment in the thread.

The review was a privilege to read bud. Excellent writing. Can you or someone answer me this? Is there still pressure from record companies and/or manipulation to force bands to put out music for the sake of sales? I have no idea because I refuse to listen to the radio and most of my music is found on bandcamp with a small or no record label.
