"I think early Cage is a legitimate point of reference for Altars, positively or negatively."

I would argue his newer stuff too actually, especially for the stonecold delivery Cage started developing since Hell's Winter which got really extreme on his last LP, Kill The Architect. I think Sadistik kinda wants to shoot for the same thing, but I can't say if it influenced him or if it's just similar by coincidence, but I figure someone like Sadistik knows and listens to Cage.

He has also cited Atmosphere as an influence, but I think that influence is more apparent on Sadistik's older work, when he came out with that Balancing Act LP. I think he actually caught a little flack back then for sounding a lot like Slug.

I would maybe argue El-P and Aesop Rock having an influence on him too but that's speculating.

Cage is a definite influence - he appeared on Sadistik's Flowers for my Father. He's made a song with Aesop Rock too. Lupe is a big influence on his most recent output I think - his lyricism has become more abstract and more focus on wordplay. I get Sadistik isn't to the taste of many on here, but for me he can mix it with the best when it comes to pure lyricism (leaving content and delivery aside).

oh okay, I haven't checked Flower's For My Father but i'm not suprised. Might have to listen to it just to be complete. I also listened to some of Ultraviolet but I stopped listening after a few tracks.

I can see the appeal in Sadistik's lyrics in a way but they've never done anything for me. I'm a big abstract Hiphop fan and I've just always found the lyrics and wordplay on some of my favorite Hiphop records (Dr. Octagonecologyst, Madvillainy, Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus, Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein, Deltron 3030's self-titled etc.) to be way more vivid and intricate. I know he puts a lot of literary references in his lyrics, and he seems to care a lot about his writing in general, but again, too melodramatic and I've always felt at least a little bit of victim mentality in his songs.

also, Sadistik is generally well-received here, I'm actually surprised to see a rather negative thread on one of his albums on this site.

I get why people don't like this, honestly. Sadistik's strengths have always been in his production and his lyrics over his delivery (which really can be whiny and grating) and both of those have declined imo since Flowers for My Father. I feel like you already have to be a fan of his previous material in order to enjoy anything new he puts out at this point since it makes you more willing to overlook or not notice the faults.

Interesting to hear coming from a fan. I have a good friend who's really into him and he came to me with this album like "hey I know you're generally not a fan but check it out, I think he improved overall, it's darker and the production is some of his best yet". Considering that this is my least favorite thing I heard from him so far I would have to agree with your statement.

Yeah his lyrics are just not that great now, and his flow and delivery has got much much worse in recent years.

I happen to be a massive fan of the production and atmosphere and it saves this and honestly makes it really great in some parts, but I really think his lyrics are terrible in places here, and the flow is janky as hell and not in an endearing way at all

I was a little disappointed with the lyrics in places here too. Definitely wouldn't call it terrible, but nothing here lived up to Waves and Mourning Glory on Salo Sessions - and they were loosies from around the same time he was recording Altars. Sadistik has made no secret of how important this album is to him, I think he just spent too long consumed with it that ultimately he lost his way a little. Saying that, I still got a lot from Altars.

Didn't care for Salo Sessions but because it was just an EP it wasn't as difficult to get through

In my own opinion, yeah he has a lot of cringy moments here and there. Wasn't a big fan of the hooks on this album either. Not like that was ever one of his strengths, but he's done well in the past on tracks like Seven Devils, Mourning Glory or Out The Dark, so I'd have expected more from what he considers his "best album". His vocals annoy me sometimes, too. I'd say his vocal tone on Phantom Limbs with Kno was as good as it's gonna get, and I'd probably say that's his most accessible work out of his discography.

There are times that even I, as someone who looks up to him in terms of lyricism, feel like there are some very poor choices of words in his bars.

Production could've been better too. It seems like Sadistik has yet to really grasp this new style. I'd think that someone who plans to make his "best album" would know better than to dwell into unfamiliar territory with a lot of the trap influenced beats and hooks on the first half.

For me, it's Sadistik's evolution as an artist that's most appealing. As a listener all the way from his debut, I've 'watched' him go from a depressed trainwreck into a more existential and cynical person. It's that very slow transition into darkness that I (and maybe a lot of other fans) can relate to. This is what makes Sadistik's music that much better for me and at the same time it's also why I can completely understand the dislike towards his works.

Album art's ugly but I doubt Sadistik cares considering it's his dream collaboration with his favorite painter. As previously mentioned, he doesn't quite cater to his audience and just goes with what he likes. Shouldn't be surprised that I won't buy the vinyl though lol.

Do you mean that Sadistik making dark and existential music is what turns some people off? Because I think the dislike (or fandom) really all comes down to his execution and his style, regardless of the type of content and the mood its trying to achieve.

"sadistik is nu metal minus the guitars" I fucking love Sadistik but that is hilarious lol.

I wasn't really digging this album much at first but I revisited it a couple days ago and it's finally growing on me. I think my biggest issue with it is how generic and "trap" some of the beats are. Makes it tough to tell the songs apart sometimes, which wasn't an issue on his previous albums for me. Still, some great tunes here (and a couple not-so-great ones). Awesome review btw.
