Thank you for this beautiful review. Still in the midst of exploring this album, my first introduction to this artist, but I already like it a lot.

missed that comment, soz
this is, like a lot of Ryuichi's stuff, a journey
it's very encouraging to see the enthusiasm for this record grow in comparison to a year ago

"For instance, I’m very proud of async, but in the 90s, I was making fake R&B, fake House music, and fake Hip-Hop music. I don’t like that. I’m not happy about it. I wish I could erase that time."
No Sakamoto, no! His 80s/ 90s albums rule

I mean, he ain't really wrong considering the pre-Ongaku stuff absolutely destroys his non-soundtrack works.

all of his stuff is beautiful so I have no argument really, just preference... if you're listening to any ryuichi its probably some amazing shit

Fair enough (although he has made some serious stinkers; "Summer Nerves," "Love is the Devil," "Life in Progress")

If I ever dive into his stuff, this a good place to start?

Not necessarily, I suggest Thousand Knives and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence for his electronic works, or 1996 and Playing the Piano for his modern classical material. He has a very diverse catalog, not even including the YMO stuff and the various collaborations, including Iggy Pop, David Sylvian and more.

Should note that listening to his collaborations with Alva Noto would ease you more into this, which is more similar.
Patiently awaiting Animals' thoughts because we have very different views on his catalog.
