Kendrick wanted to be king of both coats by wanting his most grand album to be jazz rappy, the sound most associated with the East Coast
And who gives a fuck let an artist do whatever the hell they feel like

A liitle of both actually...
IMO TPaB's biggest flaw is that it doesn't sound of its time... that dont necessarily need be a bad thing, but i feel that musically it's the opposite of innovative as it is a sound that's roughly 20 years old by now.
At least this sounds contemporary

Disagree hard with pretty much every aspect of this comment.

"TPaB is a step backwards not only in his career but a 20-year one in hiphop history, shit's outdated af. Who gives a shit about the themes or the story when stuff's a boring snoozefest.
Inb4 racist.
This is the album he NEEDED to make."
I always believed that opinions couldn't be wrong... until now.

i know what he means in that jazzy hip hop has been done in the past, atcq etc, but i dont think the modern take on it is old (well at the time of tpabs release anyway), its a sound that has evolved the past 5-10 years
tpab was not unique in using that modern sound either though. you see a lot of people freaking out like it was and brand new innovative sound. it's not.

Its not like he reinvented jazz rap, but he did a lot with that hadn't been done before in my experience, and he certainly put his own spin on it. Also, are you against all revival movements as lacking in innovation then rabid? Just curious.

This album basses so fucking hard. I have 2 ten inch subs running at 500w and this entire albums bumps so fucking much that I have to flatten the bass to almost 0 and it still vibrates my mirrors to the point where everything behind me is an absolute blur.
Another stupidly bass heavy record is Luminiferous by High On Fire

This is a grower, surprisingly, given how immediate it is. There really is a lot to unpack out of the lyrics that only come out many listens in
