Oh yeah, def very close, no doubt about it.
I think it's perfectly fine though, even more acceptable if the band got permission to use it.

hmm, i guess it's that it's technically a falling in reverse song with falling in reverse's lyrics but all i hear is silversun pickups. there are too many things reminding me from panic switch so i can't really get into the mindset that i'm listening to a falling in reverse song, you know?

How much did you originally listen to that Silversun Pickups song though, because that might be affecting your enjoyment of the FiR track. (Even though there are very large differences between the two tracks)
|
| |
of course the fact that i've heard the sspu song a number of times is affecting on my enjoyment, that's part of my point

I'm a huge silversun pickups fan so The Departure just sounds like a watered down, crumby Panic Switch cover (even tho its probably a decent song in its own right). It just could never live up to the greatness of silversun so why try and compete? idk I find it super weird that they would just lift that bassline, the chorus melody is extremely similar as well. I just feel like a lot of this album is just pulling from other bands that have done it all better before.

snide there's a difference between being inspired by something and ripping it off and claiming it as your own

It's not ripping it off when the band gave FiR permission to use the riff.

Permission or not, it shows this band have about as much artistic flair as the pewdiepie channel
|
| |
but why would you do that to begin with
|
| |
cause their core fans won't notice

A lot of FIR's fans did notice though.
"Permission or not"
That statement implies that you think covers are terrible.

No it doesn't
|

it's not technically a cover though. it's a falling in reverse song called the departure

I mean there's being inspired by something and then there's copy-pasting something; regardless of the heightened lack of originality of the latter, I see no point in it, there being nothing interesting in listening to a worse variant of something I like and can get elsewhere. That isn't to say I don't enjoy a good cover that changes up and alters an already good song (see Frank Turner's version of The Postal Service's 'The District Sleeps Along Tonight' - different interments, different tone of the song, different approach to the vocals etc.), but for the same reasons I see no enjoyment or reason in covers that are essentially copy-pastes.

I'm glad this album is selling better than their third one. Improvement needs to be rewarded.

did this album even chart?

Snide is that Tomoyo Okazaki in your avatar?

I'm late to this one. The title track is a solid show of improvement. Loser is such a catchy earworm I can hardly get to the back half of the album, it's a highlight for me.

I recall the title track of this is quite slapworthy
