look at their concerts. 80% of the crowd is female

'have a reputation for being a "chick" band?'
Makes me think of Kiss and Aerosmith for some reason. I'm sure that's a good thing...but I'm not sure

Dads "don't go to gigs anymore" so you have just provided ample evidence for the prosecution.
I do love this idea that hordes of nubile women go to Depeche Mode gigs in 2017 though, you should work for their promotional team, I believe you anyway.

I don't really get "u2 vibes" from the new stuff, even though both bands are fans of each other
if anything this has more in common with the new Metallica record I mean hell the last track of this and the first track of that one have almost literally the same "we are so fucked" lyric

Excited to listen to this, regardless of where the political message falls.
I remember listening to a single about a month ago and enjoying it.

band was always lower tier as far new wave and synthpop went in the 80's, but they do have plenty of decent tunes.. and political commentary usually means incredibly banal lyrics from people who haven't had to think of a paycheque in decades..

Nothing crazy good nor bad, but I enjoyed it; It sounds like the last few records they've made in the 2000's and I'm okay with that. DM aren't going to win me over in 2017, but they might recruit some newer fans. Lower Tier New Wave/Synth from the 80's? Jesus, that's all sorts of ass backwards... Handful of LP's from the 80's that are top-notch.

blondie have plenty of top-notch albums from the 80's as well, but if you look at them objectively, they're a fairly bland affair.. I don't know, taster's choice obviously.. but this album was always going to be a 3..

i objectively don't get your post
if you're considering something a bland affair why would you even consider any of it "top-notch" in the first place
also, fix your period key..

This is pretty much a great return to form. Not as good as their last great album Playing the Angel but I'll take it

i feel like people have been calling every record they've put out since SOFAD a return to form, lol
in any case, i realized today that every DM closer is awesome, and usually among at least the top 4 or 5 of the album
"Fail" is one of my favorites here, and even on a searching record like Broken Frame, "Sun and the Rainfall" was like this moment of perfect clarity and purpose

Yeah, a strong closer has always been their thing. The only exception I can think of is New Dress from Black Celebration. I don't care what Martin was trying to do; no Depeche Mode album should end with the words "Princess Di is wearing a new dress"

Bruh how many times I gotta tell you that New Dress is the best song ever

By this point for me the one and only way to close BC is But Not Tonight

I do love BNT as the closer and am disappointed it wasn't on the remaster of the album but Nee Dress owns at well
And ending an album with that statement was kind of a different thing in 1986

This album is really great. It obviously doesn't touch Violator or anything, but it's solid all the way through. Potentially a top 10 album for me this year.

Haven't had a chance to listen to this all the way through a second time yet and I really want to love this, not like it. Hopefully it gets even better with subsequent listens. First impressions were good but slightly let down vs. high expectations.

SPIRIT stands for it's self, you can't compare it to any other release of dM...
