I like Scarlet Evil Witching Black but can't really dig Crossing the Fiery Path or any of Necromantia's pre-95 demos other than in historical terms.
I like pre 95 Varathron better, His Majesty at the Swamp and Walpurgisnacht are both decent.
Rotting Christ I actually like the less distinct sound of Satanas Tedeum over Thy Mighty Contract or Non Serviam.
I guess for the me the classic Hellenic sound is a bit too melodic, a bit too slow, a bit to NWOBHM influenced. I respect their place in history but "most essential black metal trio" is a bit of a stretch for me.

Maybe he's just stating that Ulcerate is one of the most far from melodic metal bands out there, which would be a pretty solid argument.

Ulcerate create melody in places it has no business existing. Therein lies the secret of their genius. That, and incredible songwriting coupled with one of the planets best drummers makes them gods of dm. Case closed.

I shouldn't have slept on this for so long. This fucks! BM albums with death metal production slowly turn into a new weakness of mine.
(Also wow, this thread is a wild one.)

Best behexen to start on?

If you like punchy black-death, then try this one.
For more traditional BM, go for their debut or By the Blessing of Satan.

Well made as always. It got a bit repetitive for me towards the second half of the album, but overall good
