nah they matter, otherwise anyone would listen to anything. well no ones ever been forced to stick to one genre. tons of metal bands switch throughout their careers, bathory, enslaved etc. tho i personally hate when they go prog
how? they just dont bother listening to metal lol. yea a lot of them are cheesy. cheese is good. embrace the cheese. many metalheads themselves have trouble doing so, leading to a disdainfully small portion of power metal lovers. i mean to write a list explaining how to listen to power metal since so few understand it
??? metal has everything lyrics from dragon slaying to heartbreak songs to desolation to joy to raunchy sex
also caring about subject matter is very unmetal. the riffs, it is all about the riffs.
mccore meanwhile is the most banal, least creative, least intuitive, lethargic genre thats ever existed

@Koris Whiplash was the first Metallica song I ever heard and of course I was sold immediately. Now I never need to hear it again (:

@Muzyki: Again, genre barriers to me are pointless and creativity stifling.
I like a fair bit, but I genuinely am of the belief that more of the genre should've taken notes from the first Sabbath album way more. There's Trad Doom (which is quite good) but that's about it for EARLY Sabbath worship. The Priest style just doesn't appeal to me as much. It's really, just not dark enough most of the time. Maybe Priest was dark for 1976 standards, but not now. Sabbath set the bar with Ozzy when it comes to a dark, haunting, brooding atmosphere.
Caring about subject matter for me is very important if there is subject matter at all, because for me music is a cathartic release. I never find myself in the mood for the super corny cheesy dragon slayer fantasy stuff. Generally I prefer social issues to be at the forefront if it isn't about internal battles within the mind or some wacky sci-fi concept.
"mccore meanwhile is the most banal, least creative, least intuitive, lethargic genre thats ever existed"
I mean sure there's a lot of wheat to separate from the chaff but isn't that every genre? What about how 90% of brutal death "slam" records ALL SOUND THE SAME? Same tones, same "brutal" sound, same indecipherable vocals.
@everyone: sorry to re-interrupt y'all, didnt see you there

See where Metallica got it right was they always talked about real shit in their prime. The riffs were a great instrumental backing but James' best work for me was on tracks like Dyers Eve (the ANGER there just feels super genuine and right), Fade to Black (I don't care how basic of a take this is that is a top 5 Metallica song) and One (again, basic as it may be, top 5 tier song).

there isnt rly barriers just simple observation. rly theres only 4 distinct metal genres--trad, thrash, death, and black. all other metal genres are derived either from taking outside elements and metalizing them or combining two or more of those 4.

@venin: have you actually listened to Sad Wings of Destiny? I understand that much of Priest's later work is more cheesy, but Sad Wings has a lot of those gothic doom vibes that Sabbath brought in their early work. Obviously they had their own spin on the sound, owing to Rob Halford's operatic vocals and the more energetic drumwork, but a lot of the atmosphere is still there

Yeah Sad Wings is a really good one. Probably my favorite Priest album. The stuff after sort of lost me. Not to say it was BAD just not particularly my mood usually. Whenever I go back and listen to a really early metal album I instinctively hope I get some of those classic Sabbath vibes/darker feelings.

debut sabbath is their only actually good album, and priest have always sucked and werent rly metal until painkiller.
thrash was pretty much founded on social issues subjects n like i said theres metal bands who write lyrics about literally anything. doesnt matter cuz riffs come first anyway, put w/e lyrics u want as long as it riffs
well no. mccore is all chaff. generally metal bands have at least some wheat, but theres a reason my average rating is still below 2.5 despite over 3k lmao
yea brutal death sucks butt. ironically named bc trv death metal riffs so much heavier. its still metal even if it isnt good most of the time

Yeah the thing with thrash to me is if I listen to too much of it in a short period it all starts sounding the same. Death metal, usually melodic/prog death doesn't have this for me but pure OSDM is kinda difficult. The amelodic vibe combined with the again indecipherable vocals (looking at YOU Chris Barnes) is not really my thing.
Mines 3.48 here and 3.29 on RYM which is a far more definitive database for my opinions tbqh. There's a lot of great metalcore lmao especially on the vocal side of things.
I mean maybe OSDM is heavier but neither really do much for me. I need like a level of progressiveness or melody to my music these days. Probably why Justice is my #1 from this band.
