nah i have no idea about spotify. i don't use it except for brief listens to new releases as the quality is dreadful.

unless the files are specifically fucked, nightmare most likely sounds just as much worse there; it's punchier, though, no doubt, so i'm sure plenty of folks like it more anyway.

Shadowmire, if Nightmare is punchy then The Stage has negative punchiness. It's lacking fullness so it sounds really unbalanced almost hurting my ears. This is with HD 201 headphones though (which usually sound great with metal), so it's even worse for me than it would be for others.

I've compared CDs to spotify max quality (premium) before and the quality difference is barely noticeable. Also 320kbps OGG is better than 320 MP3. I was just considering maybe the spotify rip had something drastic happen to it, like being ripped in MP3 192 originally, sent to spotify and converted again into OGG.

By the way, if you've ever had a student e-mail and it still works, use it to get $5 Spotify premium. It's totally worth it. I'm not a paid shill, just love Spotify and its features.

yea i dunno dude, it's just too compressed to even compare but honestly it's still alright sounding for a modern metal record; beats shrines of paralysis easily.

do those really sound good? how do they compare to more expensive headphones?

They sound ok for $20 headphones. I've only stayed with them for quality of life reasons; they're small/light and easy to manage, long cord, cheap enough to replace easily without needing to deal with RMA. Also, I'm just used to the frequency response, which is admittedly unbalanced with a "mountain" curve and peak at 1000 Hz. But man do electric guitars sound good with them; the forward mid and upper mid range really makes metal textured and exciting. They don't really hold up well against very expensive headphones, but with my acquired taste I prefer them to some $100+ Sennheisers or other sets which often are too muddy or lacking texture. I'd probably be rocking the HD 280s if it weren't for the lack of upper mid texture (4 Khz if I recall correctly, absolutely crucial). The 598s sounds great though, just never decided to pick them up.

Shrines of Paralysis is kind of a bad example for comparison. So much clipping dude. Listen to the latest Periphery or Meshuggah; absolutely wreck The Stage in SQ.

the stage sounds significantly better than violent sleep to me but dynamics kind of score a free win. the mix is great though and it doesn't sound bad by any means.

Tue Madsen does wonders with lower dynamics, really. I love the sound of many albums he worked on.
