Explain what 'metric modulations embedded in a polymeter' means. I understand polymeter and how Meshuggah use it but not quite sure what you mean by that.

Metric or gtfo.
The whole thing about Meshuggah is the 4/4 core with riffs that may fall just short or over the bars, therefore taking a few riff cycles to reach the 'start' of the 4/4 core.

An example would be that, although the guitar may not be in explicitly 3/4 timing, it is written in a 3/4 pulse and would take a few bars to align back along with a bar or two of 5/4 to fill it out (they usually do some goofy bend or half riff to sync it back. So the guitars will sort of snake their way through the bars of 4/4 in their timing/feel until it repeats.
This is how it makes sense to me, I'm no music theory expert.
