I'm holding out hope for a metal album... NOT with growls as I don't think Mike either has the ability or inclination anymore. His clean singing voice is excellent, we could still have the beautiful softer progressive folk passages intertwined with (hopefully) creative metal riffs & most importantly a sense of unique identity. I also hope they up the tempo a little which will make the more laid back sections feel more distinct, as I appreciate the contrast.
Yeah essentially I'm saying make a metal era Opeth album without growls, bring back the creativity & produce something distinctive & unique with an injection of energy. IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR? Probably.

Tbh he's looking a lot more enthusiastic live now when playing the older/heavier material.
Even if his voice can't do the tracks justice, it's nice to see him enjoying the performance as over the past few years he has looked very uninterested when playing this material.

We can always hope...
And I'm not even asking for metal or heavy at all, just for something interesting. Heritage is perfect to me for instance, so if they release something as adventurous as that next I'm a happy man!

@Pleb
When you say 'now' what do you mean exactly? I think it's been a year (my memory sucks though) since I saw them in Manchester. His growls did look like they were being delivered by a man obligated to do them, rather than with any genuine enthusiasm. I don't know if you can remember.
I enjoyed the gig but it was the one negative I couldn't help but notice.

And yes Heritage was very good, I'd be happy with an album of that quality & distinctiveness.

Just over this past year.
I agree though, when I saw them on the PC tour he was very still and looked like he just wanted to get those songs finished.

Yeah, a lot of the tracks are quite cool, but the main issue has always been and will always be the production for me. It drains the life out of the thing

Is it just me or are those voice over parts in the intro and outro stupid and silly? Dislike them a lot.

Well, they don't distract from the music imo and they fit into this while Sorceress/evil ex wife thing. It's okay I'd say

I like Era, but it's not the kind of closer I'm expecting from this band

Agreed about Era.
The voice over always puts me off, it sounds cheap to me or something. I don't know why.
I like The Wilde Flowers, Will O The Wisp, 7th Soujourn, Strange Brew and A Fleeting Glance though. Don't care much for the t/t at all, Era doesn't impress me and Sorceress 2 is nice.
Still disappointed with this.

A Fleeting Glance always was a favourite of mine off this. It's such a nice song in every way idk. The folky stuff on this is great, the heavy sections are what suffers from the production

Exactly. That's precisely how I feel about this too. I skipped through Chrysalis a little and it just sounds like cardboard.
