this isn't nearly their best album but it's still a hell of a lot better than Act IV

i find this is an album that relies a lot more on atmosphere and the journey, and much less on hooks and energy. its more midtempo. there are amazing moments in all the songs but they arent catchy or anything. might take some people longer to get into for those reasons.

I can see why you like it so much. the run of songs from Gloria through the March is pretty amazing and the Haves Have Naught is one of the best songs they've ever done but man when Casey relies too much on baroque stuff and starts writing a musical instead of an album I start to fall asleep

Spent today re-listening through all the acts. This is tied with Act IV for me, I do see it as kind of Act IV Part 2, it even has the same style of artwork.
For me; Act II is still the best, Act III, Act V=Act IV and then Act I
Saying that I have Act I at a 4/5. Fuck this band is too good.

I kind of feel like this and Act IV should have been one album but Casey split them because he'd been promising six Acts for so long. Maybe I'm paranoid but I mean literally nothing happens story-wise for the first five songs of IV it's just the Boy wandering around reminiscing sadly, and there's a tonne of excess near the end of that album that should have been trimmed. idk

disc lacks energy hard
obviously the music's well-composed and well-mixed and what not, but most of this is just kinda there for me
can't remember the last time I couldn't decide on even a tentative rating after a first listen, but that's the case here

merchnow finally sent my digital download (even though my vinyl won't come until like... October... figures) so I'm jamming now. Gonna do a review, but it'll probably take about a week because this is The Dear Hunter and you actually have to listen to the album.

A Beginning, Gloria, The Haves Have Naught, and the Flame/Fire duo were my faves based off that one listen
Looking forward to giving this more listens, which I guess is a good thing

Agreed with all those ash I'd chuck in the March too that shit is cash. Always loved Casey's deliciously evil catchy as sin Pimp and Priest songs they're the best part of this whole story for me

I don't see this as a 5 or being better than Act IV, to be honest. Gonna need to listen to it a bunch to make a proper assessment, though.

There are so many reprises of previous acts it's mental. Only just realised the end of A Beginning is the same melody as The Lake South and the end of City Escape. How do you even write something as complex as this?
