a dude once told me that they were a sham band capitalizing on the path carved by alt-j in an effort to be a cookie cutter festival status indie band for fame and bitches and that their music has literally zero artistic value.

"I've definitely been in some situations where I've come to a very similar conclusion. "
the thing is, who cares as long as the music is enjoyable
you have to look at todays music industry and realize that capitalizing on styles that are obviously working may be "shallow" from one perspective doesn't mean you have no warrant as an artist. if you want to make a career of music these days you need to do what you need to do. you don't see people criticizing good pop artists of this because its fucking obvious. but for some reason since they are an indie band its different and much more reproachable? nah nigga. who the fuck cares.

For sure. Shallow or not, it's all sounds. Just because someone is pulling from more modern ideas in their music, that doesn't mean they're selling out (a term that's definitely thrown more at indie bands). Besides, even if a band does do something "sellout-y", people should understand that artists need money, and sometimes you might need to make some artistic compromises.
Like I remember reading about how one time when a Modest Mouse song was licensed for use in a commercial, and Issac Brock said something along the lines of "don't bitch about what I do with my music when you're spending your parents money".

how can you be a sell out on your first album tho is the real question though. dont you have to be not sold out in order to sell out?

haha I fucking love Brock so much
really the only thing these guys and Alt-J have in common is their use of groove/percussion as a driving force in their songs imo and that's so vague it applies to literally hundreds of other bands they just happen to do it the best

they definitely dont tho, i mean maybe for mainstream bands but in general they definitely dont "do it the best"

What happened here lol.
I was just meaning if this one or the last one is the better record from the group. Not really needing a quadruple response.

I like this more than their first, but checking their debut first wouldn't hurt. I can definitely see some evolution between the two.
