Jimmy is a very influential drummer. I already knew that he came back for machina.
The whole reason i got into the pumpkins is when i heard tonight tonight, bullet with butterfly wings and disarm on the radio, i knew due to a certain simpsons episode that that was billy corgan of the SP singing. I downloaded millions of their songs trying to find these songs because i didnt know the name of any of them. These millions of songs got me into them. So in conclusoion, i rekon that billys voice is recognisible, but he has many different singing voices, you just have to of heard them all.

I got gish today, its pretty good. Snail is my faveourite track. Too bad there werent more tracks. I always thought drown was on this album, they shoodof put it on.

If Billy took LSD himself, then why did they kick Jimmy out for drug abuse?
I was talking about his speaking voice.

They kicked out Jimmy because he was doing heroin, a much harder drug. Plus he was taking it with the band's touring keyboardist and the keyboardist died,

I really don't like this album. Adore is probably my favorite.

I used to really like this album but now it is probably my least favourite Pumpkin album. It is very much a first album, they are all trying really hard cramming the songs with mutliple parts, solos etc. Quite frankly with the exception of Jimmy Chamberlain none of them are even close to being virtuosos. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Billys guitar solos but he is not a good enough player (as in his vocabulary is too limited) to have 3-4 in one song (although there are exceptions to this later on Geek USA, Hummer). His songwriting is also quite average on this one but he was only starting out. Still some great tracks here. My picks

Tristessa - what the hell was the reviewer talking about with 'acoustic sound'? Its a striaght up rong song with none of the fat like other songs. Great riffs, exception drumming and catchy solo.

Window Paine - Like the reviewer said. Special shot out to Jimmy C drumwork particularly that drum fill that leads the song into the final climax.

Rinoceros - Really good trippy song with excellent drumming again and probably one of Billys best ever solos.

So yeah I think this album is only for completists. Siamese Dream is much much better instead of trying to make almost every track some kind of epic like they did here they only made the ones that should be epic, epic (Hummer, Geek USA, Soma, Silver****) and broke them up with straight ahead rockers and ballads.

That makes me sad that you said Rhinoceros was meh, that has to be my favoritest Smashing Pumpkins song ever!

i think that considering that it's a debut album, gish is absolutely phenomenal. it's not as good as siamese dream or mellon collie, but that's only because as opposed to a concept, inspiration, purpose, etc. (with the latter two), gish was a juxtaposition all that billy had done before then. he was just trying to get a foothold with this. do you think that siamese dream would have been a good debut album? I don't, it's too intelligent and too conceptual.

no. just because it's different doesn't mean it's for completists. a lot of these tracks are really good, and you seem to have a problem with them just because they don't sound like siamese dream.

and silverfuck isn't epic as much as it is a really fun to listen to jam session.

and geek USA has one solo. sorry.

Daydream is a waste of time, but I really like this album.

Not as rocky or immediate as Siamese Dream, but it still has charm.

Yeah Siamese Dream looms over Gish, but Gish is one of the best albums of a very good year for rock ('91). Is it just me, or does some of this album (especially I Am One) sound like it could be played by Soundgarden? Theyre both delightfully HEAVY. I think they both site Black Sabbath as an influence, and I can definitley hear it.

Although it lacks the sonic kick of Siamese Dream and the grandeur of Mellon Collie, Gish still gives us a good taste of what was to come. Siva is vintage Pumpkins and great live. Siamese Dream is the one for me however.
