I think the way it is is you've got to let an old act have life breathed into them so they become a favourite and that takes time and letting them be possibly the only classic band you're checking at that time - and it could take a few months to make that connection.

Right now the classic acts I'm getting into are Roxy Music and then PJ Harvey sort of waiting in the wings for when I'm done with them.

I'm doing a music course atm and we're doing exactly what you described actually, starting from the inception of Rock and roll music and moving through time right up to modern Rock/pop/metal etc. Very cool stuff. Highly recommend Sgt. Pepper as a first Beatles album btw. Never been a massive fan of them but that album is really good.

If it helps the book we're studying from atm is called "What's that sound? An Introduction to Rock and it's History". It's very well put together.

Rated r easily has some of their best songs, at least out of the albums i've heard so far. In the fade is fantastic, lost art and auto pilot are excellent too.
