Album is sonically excellent.
The lyrics are a bit TOO on the nose, but it works? Idk.
I don't understand why people are so off-out by them.

bangers with confrontationally political sentiment, she manages to reduce it to platitudes and a remarkably poor vocabulary.
If I look through your ratings and see any Talking Heads album rated higher than a 2 I'm calling you out.

I am not liking this as much as I wanted to. It's like a 2.5 at this time. Will listen to it more to see if it grows.

David Byrne in general has a poor vocabulary and a similarly blunt style of lyricism. I don't know when that became something worth reviling.
Idk how someone can rate the new Drake at a 3.5 (which is the same rating that I have), then rate this a 2 with the basis that it's lyrically empty and bordering on offensive. That's an inconsistency.
But I guess a protest album wouldn't be doing its job right if it didn't receive as much backlash as praise, so I guess that speaks to its strength in that regard.

All I see people talk about is Drone Bomb Me and Obama...
And Arcade mentions 4 Degrees once in his review, but really there is no problem with that song. It's not supposed to be subtle.

Seems people will only accept protest records if their meaning is obscured and applicable to general life. Well, then that wouldn't be a protest record if the artist isn't bashing her message over your head, would it?
Anyway, I can't take this dude's opinion seriously when he brought fucking race into it.

Who brought race? It's really not about race at all...
Even Drone Bomb Me

Arcade brought up race in one of his posts. Which its funny that he would bring up Antony's race as opposed to, say, the fact that she is transgendered and had to suffer through that her entire life. I've lost any withering respect I had for him from this review and posts thereafter.

Yeah her being trans puts a perspective on why she feels the way she does about the government. She feels like it has failed her. Especially with the laws going around now. Hence "I Don't Love You Anymore"
I can see the problems with this. She portrays herself as the victim or the bad guy and then tries to get the listener to follow along, which can be pretty off-putting for some people. The lyrics can be a bit too "blamey" like on Obama, but that's the only track I actually dislike.

" Idk how someone can rate the new Drake at a 3.5 (which is the same rating that I have), then rate this a 2 with the basis that it's lyrically empty and bordering on offensive. That's an inconsistency. "
it's only inconsistent if u judge the lyrics to be of equal importance to both records. the lyrics on views arent intended to make a difference to the experience of the album either way, whereas on this album they're meant to be bludgeoning and blunt political statements that are at the core of the experience

I just found this quite dull tbh, colonial arrogance aside.
The campness grates - even the production does, to be honest. It picks up issues and presents them out of context, both lyrically and musically (OPN's great but miscast here). It comes across as self-righteous rather than genuinely empathetic. I don't like "4 Degrees" all that much either.
I liked the review, but maybe phrasing it on aesthetic lines would be better? Because I wouldn't be so fussed about the whole "you weren't there man" thing if it sounded like there was at least an attempt to "be there", place it in a context or whatever.

I just can't believe that there are people that actually believe Antony has no right to feel hopeless or angry. That's so offensive to me. Being gay I had to endure a lot of shit, but it's nothing compared to what trans people go through on a day-to-day basis.
But I shouldn't expect anything more from a cardboard cut-out who culls his musical taste from general consensus.

To be fair most of her disgust on this comes from the government bombing innocent people, torturing, spying, ect ect and then acting like they are the best.
