Parts of this thread are wonderful and parts of this thread are a little unbearable. The living, breathing, feeling human thread confirmed.

So I specifically respond to your points (with quotes from the review no less) and now they have "no bearing"? Honestly, at this point, I'm beginning to resign myself to the fact that you're not going to get this nor do you have to.

As I've said numerous times, the claims I made are contextual, and they should be understood within a particular context. We agree that women being oppressed (and having their accomplishments denigrated) is a historic problem that's gained increased prevalence. So there really is no other issue here. Why do men denigrate the accomplishments of women? I argue that that comes as a result of generations of sexist domination being overturned (that's what I mean by "saving face").

You say you can't see the denigration of black women by men as a response to their success, when I literally explain how that's affected Beyonce and black women for years in the review and in 5 subsequent posts. That whole "tangent" was the context that this album is released in. The internal politics of BLM and the national discussion surrounding Beyonce's success are important in understanding where she's coming from with this album. If you dismiss my explanations out of hand, all you're proving is that you don't care for or understand the context. And that's really all this is about. In the context of Beyonce's career and in the push for civil rights, black women have seen their accomplishments denigrated by people looking to hold onto or reclaim power over them. This is part and parcel of a sexist/racist system (that we agree exists!).

It's funny because I saw the same FilthyFrank tweet and responded saying "as ling [sic] as it's brown, it's transgressive." I wonder if past me would be ashamed for so vehemently defending the importance of this album?

"So I specifically respond to your points (with quotes from the review no less) and now they have "no bearing"?"

You're citing yourself bro, about stuff that's not what's being discussed (stating things you don't mean vs talking about historical oppression and old-school masculinity and stuff and this and that and not the actual quote).

"As I've said numerous times, the claims I made are contextual, and they should be understood within a particular context"

The context is not defending what you said at all, unless you wrote something but meant something completely different, which is a problem.

"We agree that women being oppressed is a historic problem that's gained increased prevalence. Why do men denigrate the accomplishments of women?"

X does not follow Y, etc etc.

"You say you can't see the denigration of black women by men as a response to their success, when I literally explain how that's affected Beyonce and black women for years in the review and in 5 subsequent posts"

"Facing historical discrimination" is not what you said. Literally: "wherein men denigrate the accomplishments of women in an impotent attempt at saving face"

Etc etc.

Just get real bro, you said shit about black men and shit, and now you meant something completely different, either you're bullshittin' or don't know how to write, both of which are a problem on their own right.

I think we've spun out and are now discussing different things. From my understanding, your question lies in why I wrote that "men are denigrating the accomplishments of women in an impotent attempt at saving face." For the last however many posts, I've explained that men are denigrating women, not just now but forever. I've explained that that denigration comes from old conceptions of masculinity and gender relations. And as those ideals are made taboo and outdated, people are becoming more virulent in order to remain relevant and hold onto the power that that thinking lent them. Thus, they are "denigrat[ing] the accomplishments of women in an impotent attempt at saving face." Who are these men? They're the people who deny the efficacy of Black Lives Matter in the face of their leaders being women or because the main activists are women. They're people who look at Sybrina Fulton and Lezley McSpadden as opportunists, not grieving mothers. This stuff has been prevalent for a while now (just go to Breitbart or Drudge and you'll find mountains of it). The historic and current discrimination is part of this whole "context" thing I've been yammering about. When I talk about men denigrating the accomplishments of women, I'm talking about these modern and prolific instances.

All of this is either implicit in the review (when I talk about BLM and the barriers women traditionally face) or explicitly stated. You can bag on my writing all you want, but the one thing it's not is baseless and incoherent.

Again, either you don't mean what you said, or you're just bullshittin' your way outta this. And that's not counting the "sexual liberation"/"partaking in a role" thing.

I meant it, and I've defended it. By your handy-dandy definition, to denigrate something is to "attack the character or reputation of; speak ill of; defame." And I've given you here example after example of that being the case, either in people denying Beyonce's ability to achieve her own success or in people defaming and attacking the character of BLM's leaders or denying them their success. There is no argument here. I see now that you're making a semantics argument, one that holds no water.

I wrote what I meant. I wrote that "...men denigrate the accomplishments of women in an impotent attempt at saving face." I've supported it. I mean it. If to denigrate is to defame, to unfairly criticize and disparage, or to speak ill of someone or something, then there is no better word to describe what is happening to prominent black women, Beyonce included. If you don't see that after all this, I can't help you. You can call it bullshit. It's not, but if you can't see it now, I don't think you will.

I look forward to your review.
