"He's either genuinely channeling his teenage self because he still feels in touch with that time"
Listen more closely though, the lyrics aren't about teenage years, nor are they about teenage fears. They are about becoming cynical and bitter, for the most part.

" I personally quite like melodrama."
I personally hate it, which might surprise people looking at my chart. But that is because most melodrama is preconceived. The melodrama like we find in this album is the result of an honest, struggling young man feeling utterly alone and detached from this world.

@dbizzles I haven't even listened to it. I'm just saying that Sputnik has a real hard-on for it. I really like Deja and YFW so I'll probably dig this too.

Oh, yeah makes sense. I love this album, so I get why other people do too, but there are a huge number of user's that profess this as the Holy Grail. I think you'd probably like it based on other threads in which we've interacted.

Yeah this album is amazing but saying it's one of the "greatest of all time" is pretty silly

Agreed, it a really solid album, but nothing mind-blowing

I think that there are two different kinds of rating. Whilst I don't think this album is one of the greatest albums of all time or the most technically brilliant album or that it even has the greatest songwriting it's a personal five to me. It connected with me personally for whatever reason.

Which is what it is all about.
The thing is though. All time 'classics' whether shite or not all offer something, a particular thing that anyone can appreciate. They have made themselves indelible through time because they continue to hold a purpose.
This has no purpose other than to appeal to the nullified minds of kids who know no better. It's total folly and what's worse it's packaged and shiny. It's Walt Disney, a happy meal, a playground ride, as emotionally provocative as jumping off the side of the swimming pool.

It is not a classic, mainly because I don't really like the second half of it. However, it was the record that kind of introduced me to alternative music if I remember correctly. I've grown a bit out of it, but seeing 90% of this performed live was bloody awesome.
'nothing more than a tool to make $$$.'
I have the feeling they just do whatever the fuck they want. They could have continued with their safe accessible Deja emo style of music but instead they decided to get more agressive with every album.

tbh, this resonates much more at 27, then when I was 21 (when I first heard it). Like I said before, your review is very solid but it doesn't apply to this album. The themes in this album are not the themes aimed at teens, nor are they the themes that teens are preoccupied with. The themes here, are of a bitter man, whose teen years are merely a far cry when he was still 'innocent' and passionate about things.
