Why does everyone hate White Privilege II so much
|

I don't care about artist politics. Everyone has their own viewpoints. It's when their politics are used as an excuse to write bad music that I start to get irked.

Yeah I don't really have a problem with the White Privilege II's message, the song itself is just very poorly written.

Conscious hip hop really irritates me for some reason. because it gets preachy and pretentious (ironically the music itself is often completely unpretentious)
edit: i actually didn't read arcade's comment when i wrote this but the point needed re-affirmation is suppose.

Yeah I don't really have a problem with the White Privilege II's message, the song itself is just very poorly written. literally the same thing countless people thought about his gay song

Downtown, Kevin, and the Opener are actually kickass, but the shit here is legitimately shit.
White Privilege II is a mess, lyrically and sonically, but it is a compelling one, and certainly one that has proven to piss multiple people off. Still don't get why people 1 on principle. This is probably a 2.0-2.5. I don't think Macklemore is asking to be treated like a saint here, but because he doesn't have the rage to tell them to fuck off, people label him a pretentious, self-righteous pussy.
Definitely going to have to let this sit though. The Heist was excellent, and this is clearly a step down already.

"the question really is why would anybody like it. it's an overwrote, overlong, pretentious, condescending, and preachy mess of a song that's not pleasant to listen to from any point of view. "
[123].
Macklemore flailing himself for being white for 8 minutes is just so incredibly cringeworthy, especially since "White Privilege II" commits the same sin as "Same Love" and is just soooooo underwritten musically. It's barely a song, more of a awful attempt at a poem.

I agree both are kind of underwritten, but I thought Same Love was a lot more effective as a pretty straightforward pop song.

Agree with Arcade, though it did pioneer in a sense because nobody really discussed same-gender marriage or otherwise in a catchy, mainstream song until that moment. It was offensive for those tendencies I think though bringing it to light four years ago, could you say the same about it now these days?

I'll bump Thrift Shop when it comes on, but I am getting tired of this guy's shtick.

Thanks for the feature, third feature for me this is great. This definitely makes me know I'm making strides as an aspiring music journalist.
Edit: Fourth feature I mean, keep forgetting I had the Zedd, Snoop, Madeon reviews featured in the past.
