I had a great binge when I got into these guys, and I still enjoy the vast majority of their material. Yeah, they've worn off and as I've heard more music, I've become less fond of James' vocals, but I still like them as a whole and think they can definitely produce another solid, enjoyable album. Making their next release more ADToE and less this would at least be a start.

I can respect that, but I just can't stand James anymore, I really can't

Still love this band with all my heart and I HATE to say that but James is slowly becoming unbearable... Not only at live performances but even with studio recordings.

I think its safe to say the next one is gonna be more typical DT sound. Probably close to ADTOE/Black Clouds I'd imagine.

Whether you like this or not, you can't deny that this was something completely new for them (lots of shorter songs, more unusual song structures, a "musical" style, piano heavy etc).

Personally, I'd like to see a heavy album next, I think that's long overdue and they could do with proving they can still do that (after a relatively light album in this and quite a tame album in the self titled). They just need to play to their strengths, ignore the haters and produce long songs, with badass riffs, proggy extended instrumental sections and personal/real-life metaphorical lyrics.

well everyone in this band is in their fifties. It definitely won't be long before they call it quits tbh.

If whatever they do next is at least on par with Octavarium, I think I'll be content.

I truly believe we will never hear another album as great as octavarium. For all its strengths and weaknessess, it was the last truly great DT record. They've got much worse since then. Their music sounds completely robotic these days.

And you know what they say. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. These guys have give it all they got. It can only get worse from here on.

Last really great one was Black Clouds I'd say, never liked Octavarium much for some reason... I even find Systematic Chaos more enjoyable but I might be the only person on earth feeling that way so nvm...

"It can only get worse from here on."

Damn that would be afwul... I still refuse to think that it can get worse than this but at the same time I'm also not very confident regarding the quality of a new record...

I only like Octavarium's title track, the rest doesn't do much for me. I dig the sound actually, but the songs are just totally meh.

Octavarium is inconsistent as hell, but I'd say it's greater than the sum of its parts. The Root of All Evil, These Walls and Panic Attack are solid; Sacrificed Sons is derivative of In the Name of God but it's still a damn good track; and the only part of the title track I don't like is when James screams the song name at the end. Otherwise, it'll always be in my Top 10 Dream Theater songs.

Still, i believe it. It's sad but it is true. If the band was to "recover" they would have done it already.
You can reinvent the wheel only once in your career and DT have done it already. A band can keep up with stylistic "modernisms" for so long. I just have zero expectations for these guys.

"Last really great one was Black Clouds I'd say"

I cannot argue with you here, in my mind, Black Clouds is very close to Octavarium. However, black clouds lacks a song so epic and phenomenal as the t/t plus i think octavarium is memorable in many ways whereas the other album is not.

I don't know man, I'd rather let them just go a little more instrumental and atmospheric, and just try to make these songs a little vibier and utilize James as little as possible

That approach could work, i don't think la brie would agree to neglect his role though.

To speak of Black Clouds and Octavarium it's pretty much the other way round for me, plus I enjoy The Count of Tuscany way more than the t/t of the latter one...

And unfortunately, as I said, I'm not very confident they are able to pull off another great one, so agreed on that. But hope is the last to die :]

Black Clouds was really good imo

I definitely think they can come out with another great album, The Astonishing is by far the most disappointing album they have ever put out
