Work is amazing

I don't get what you all see in Work, literally one of the most repetitive and obnoxious songs I've ever heard. Rihanna can do WAY better.

Tame Impala thinks it's better than his version so

It's still okay tho

it's literally the same backing track with her singing over it

i think her version is better.
i also think her version might be the best song in her discog.
whereas i think tame impala has plenty of better songs.

Somehow I like it quite a bit better though

smae, parker is fine enough vocalist, but clearly not as good as rihanna imo (not that he has to be ofc)

He said that he acknowledged it was basically the same, but that he had written it with a poppy r 'n' b vibe in mind so he thought the fact that Rihanna covered it was a godsend

I can't get behind calling that version a cover. I get that Parker actually worked on it but I have never heard another cover that is so insanely close to the original. It's better viewed as just an alternate version with Rihanna singing.

karyoke/cover/alternate version, either/or is fine idk

I guess all I mean is that, to the extent that any cover version has artistic merit, Rihanna's has absolutely none. It's fine if you enjoy it though.

lol artistic merit

All I mean is that if you're going to cover something you should try to put your own spin on it or make it an homage without directly copying it. Modern songs aren't like classical pieces.
|
| |
Like, the first time I heard Same Ol Mistakes (it came on in the background in someone's mix and I wasn't paying close attention) I literally thought it was the original version for almost the entire duration of the song until I looked at the person's phone. That shouldn't be the case.

"All I mean is that if you're going to cover something you should try to put your own spin on it or make it an homage without directly copying it."
there's no reason this should or has to b the case at all .
also literally something to be said for her voice being the change + centerpiece of the cover itself but w/e

Then literally what is the point of doing a cover if all you're trying to do is replicate the original? That's pretty clearly what they were trying to do here. For all I know it's literally the same tracks used in the TI version slightly remixed. I listened to them side by side last night and they're virtually indistinguishable aside from the vocals and the fact that Rihanna's is slightly longer.
And while I don't listen to or like Rihanna I've heard her do much more interesting and engaging vocals than she does on that track, I don't think she adds any of her personality to the song whatsoever.
Whatever though, agree to disagree I guess. The fault probalby lies with me for trying to find any artistic value in Rihanna's work.

yea i understand that it's kind of uncanny how familiar they are. but also rihanna rules a lot harder than tame impala ever have
