Finished listening twice now. So this review is pretty spot on. Gave it a couple of listens, and all I conclude is Coldplay has hit rock bottom. This album is very similar to Mylo Xyloto (even the artwork is similar)) and frankly it stinks. Adventure of a Lifetime was a good choice for first single because it's the most memorable song here. Army Of One is also fine. But yeah, shit album. They're a long, long way away from the classy sounds of Parachutes, A Rush..., X&Y, or Viva La Vida (their peak).
Good review and right on the money.

Great review mate, even though I liked the album a little bit more than most people on here. In my books, it's probably at least better than most of Ghost Stories.
Still, you pretty much nailed the review, man!

Nice review even if I disagree.
Some nice tracks, a lot of filler, but by now that's the expectation. I actually liked Ghost Stories quite a bit and Magic was fantastic, but too often now it feels like they're trying too hard to make each album sound different and they don't progress or evolve any of their ideas. All it ends up being is 'here's a new sound with some promise, but we aren't going to develop on that promise and instead do something completely different next time.'

Also Rush of Blood > Viva > Parachutes > Blue Room > rest

thx guys. For me it's actually Parachutes > Viva > Rush of Blood > Blue Room.
I don't think they are not developing their sound though. I think this is pretty much a direct continuation of "Mylo Xyloto". "Ghost Stories" was just an anomaly that was pretty clearly caused by Gwyneth. It's just that they are getting progressively worse with every album.

chris martin said this album's sound is the sound he envisioned the band reaching when they started over a decade ago

I call PR bullshit tbh.

well duh. what's he going to say. well guys it sucks ass actually sorry
|

mylo is the last full album i've heard by these guys, & it basically sounded to me like the band was swallowed up, replaced by robot counterparts, and programmed to play pristine, technological interpretations of coldplay until an album as streamlined as an avicii or skrillex product came out
that being said, wasn't all that bad
|

If I dug Adventure of a Lifetime, there are any chances that I dig this as a whole?

"chris martin said this album's sound is the sound he envisioned the band reaching when they started over a decade ago"
shit, by this point it's almost 2 decades (they allegedly started in '96?)
i don't think it's disingenuous tho, i imagine he wanted to do coldplay's version of the big Kid A type switch-up somewhere along the line, which i guess somehow Mylo & (what i've heard of) this kind of are

I think this is still marginally better than X&Y tbh

Album Rating: 1.5
I think most of the negativity around X&Y is to do with the fact it was sandwiched between arguably their two best releases, so it's often compared against those.

I think a lot of the negativity comes from the fact that it's a ridiculously fucking terrible album

parachutes is the best anyway

it isn't even that terrible, one or two awful tracks and some filler but overall it's at worst average

I really do love Coldplay but yeah this album was a major let down. I didn't like Mylo Xyloto and this just sounds like that but way more over produced and forced.
In terms of their albums ranked this would be mine:
1) Rush of Blood to the Head
2) Viva La Vida
3) X&Y (I think its hugely underrated)
4) Parachutes
5) Ghost Stories
6) Mylo Xyloto
7) A Head Full of Dreams
